Hiccup-Cup

Tech ID:
HSC-1475
Description:

The Hiccup-Cup is a device designed to relieve the spasms of the diaphragm that cause the hiccups.  The device is a straw-like instrument for the user to draw water through when they get the hiccups. One end of the straw is a mouthpiece on which the user bites down. The opposite end of the device, within the lumen of straw, is a cotton filter or unilateral plastic valve that adds resistance to the flow of liquid through the straw. The user places the device in a cup of water and attempts to quickly and repeatedly drink through the straw, which requires extra effort due to the built-in resistance. This process stimulates the vagus nerve, which causes the involuntary spasms of the diaphragm to stop.

Background:

Nearly everyone has experienced the hiccups at some time in their lives. Although the hiccups are not typically a clinically significant experience, most people find the spontaneous spasms of the diaphragm to be annoying and often embarrassing. While there are several home remedies for the hiccups, the effectiveness of these remedies remains is unproven. The Hiccup-Cup is an effective, reliable, over-the-counter device which consistently relieves the hiccups.
